August 8 — Rev. Andy Burnette
The Sermon on the Amount
The congregation's annual pledge drive will be kicking off soon. With humor and verve, we'll think about what and why we pledge.
POOL PARTY! Mark your Calendar!
We will be having our annual UUCC Summer Pool Party in Danville this Sunday evening, August 1 from 7 to 9 PM at the Gill family Aquatic Center in Ellis Park, Danville. The pool offers a zero entry, spray ground, lazy river, vortex, and a 125 ft. water slide. Plan to bring your family and friends for lots of fun. The concession stand won't be open, so please bring snacks and drinks ( for consumption on the upper deck only). So we will know how many folks to expect, please RSVP to Paula Bray, Mobile: (317)371-9852 Email pbray@att.net
Social Justice Outreach — Emily Kennedy, Social Justice Committee Chair
Our involvement with five other Danville churches in outreach programs grows. For some time we have been among the contributors to the Shared Blessings food pantry, and now we are involved in Shared Missions. Let me tell you, the work that some of the churches are doing is impressive.
The current Shared Mission is the Back to School Celebration on Saturday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to noon at Danville UMC, at which backpacks and school supplies will be available for families of limited means. Hot dogs, popcorn, Bounce House, games, and balloons will also be provided. Three of us are volunteering to work that morning, but cash for the stuff is needed. Please put an envelope marked Back to School with money in it in the collection plate on Sunday, or a check made out to Danville UMC with Back to School in the memo line. Marcia or I will see that it gets there. Gracias. Peace.
Volunteers Needed for Rummage Sale
We need a number of people to help make the annual UUCC Rummage Sale a success!
- Volunteers to help set up the Sale August 16, 17, and 18.
- Volunteers to run the Sale in two shifts, 7:30 a.m. to noon, noon to 4:30 p.m. on three days, August 19, 20 and 21.
- Volunteers to pack up the leftover donations and cart to Goodwill on Saturday, August 21, after 5 p.m.
If you can help (even for an hour or two), please send an e-mail to Susie Poole at sspoole@lightbound.com.
Also, don't forget to gather your Rummage Sale items! Remember to gather only "gently used" items. You will be able to drop off the donated goods the two Sundays prior to the sale in the Friendship Hall, as well as the evenings during the week of the sale. For more information, contact Susie Poole at 727-5836.
Teacher Appreciation/Religious Exploration Dinner Discussion
Would you like a chance to thank the teachers who worked with the children and youth in RE this year? Would you like to help the Religious Exploration Committee plan a successful 2010—11 RE year? Then please come join on us on Wednesday, August 4 from 6—8 p.m. in Friendship Hall for a simple pizza and salad dinner discussion. We are hoping that all parents who did not teach can share the cost of the meal or sign-up to bring a salad as a token of their appreciation. Another important way you can show your appreciation is by sharing what you and your children like about the RE program at UUCC and what you would like to see in future home, RE programming.
While it seems contradictory to say that we prefer the children stay at our present space constraints make the logistics of sharing a meal and engaging in a meaningful dialogue with many young voices in the background a bit daunting. Therefore, we ask that you try to make your own childcare arrangements. However, if this will prevent you from coming please let us know. We could make arrangements for supervision of just a few children in the back of the hall.
Your input and participation mean so much to us and to the quality of our UU programming for children. Bring your gratitude, comments, new ideas, and suggestions for improvement! Please RSVP either way by Sunday, August 1, and let us know if you need childcare.

Fresh Veggies for the Food Pantry?
In addition to nonperishable food items, the the Shared Blessings Food Pantry at the Danville Methodist Church would love to get fresh produce from you gardeners whose gardens have produced more than you can use.
If you bring donations on Sunday, the Dentons will deliver them on Tuesday evening when they deliver our Sunday food donations. Or you can take them yourself when the pantry is open: 6:00 — 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, 10 — noon on Saturdays. The Danville Methodist Church is located on Mill St, just east of Makee Rd.
The Food Pantry in Danville serves 120-160 different families per month. This Sunday, remember to donate just a few cans of food for our children to collect!
Hendricks Libraries Host One County, One Book
The six Hendricks County libraries are collaborating on a One County, One Book project in 2010. The book that library patrons are being asked to read is Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. This is the true story of Mortenson, a mountain climber, who was injured while trying to climb K2, the second highest mountain in the world and ended up recovering in the small village of Korphe, Pakistan. During his recovery he noticed the children were writing in the dirt using sticks. He vowed to return and build them a school. How he works to build this school and over 80 more is his inspiring story.
One County, One Book will begin at the Hendricks County Fair July 18—24. By visiting the libraries' booth, patrons can pick up a bookmark, a brochure with dates and times of programs being offered by the libraries, and banks for the children to collect pennies, which will be used to support Mortenson's charity, Pennies for Peace. Patrons will be reading the book during August, and may participate in a variety of programs being offered by each library during the month of September. Programs include: book discussions, craft projects, various films about the Pakistan/Afghanistan region, and a panel discussion on the area. The project will culminate on September 27th when Mortenson will speak in Indianapolis. A limited number of tickets to his speech will be given as prizes to the participants at the library programs. Stop by or call your local library or check out our website: hendrickslibrary1c1b.com for more information.
Huusier Paluuza!
Here it is... a chance to engage our congregations in the power of collective gathering...an opportunity to share the unconditional love and acceptance of our faith with a broader community...a spirited celebration for all ages. What is it? The Huusier Paluuza!
On Saturday, September 18, current and future UU congregants in Central Indiana will gather on the campus of the Unitarian Unviersalist Church of Indianapolis (UUI) for the Huusier Paluuza. This camp-meeting style extravaganza will celebrate the "big tent" philosophy of our faith with hands-on family activities, youth/young adult worship, and a rock band, followed by a community meal. An extended evening of dynamic music and worship will follow, featuring the preaching talents of three "firebrands:" Rev. Meg Barnhouse, Rev. Bill Breeden (UU Bloomington), and Rev. Stephen Sinclair (UUI). Music will be provided by the Celebration Choir (composed of singers from UU congregations and UUI neighbors), the UU Blues Gospel Band from UU Bloomington, and 5Thin Air.
The project has received significant financial support from the UUA's Fund for UUism and UUI's Community Beacon Fund. But we need more than money to make this event happen—we need the active participation of UU congregations in Central Indiana. Here's how you get involved:
- Appoint a representative to the planning team. We are committed to making this project emblematic of UUism cooperative and collaborative spirit. Currently UUI, Heartland, All Souls, Oaklandon, and Terre Haute are involved. We welcome everyone!
- Contribute an idea or project. We are seeking hands-on, family activities that combine creativity and spirituality to express our principles.
- Help us recruit volunteers. We are seeking volunteers to help with logistics, community meal, promotions, hospitality, and more.
For more information, email Pam Blevins Hinkle, or call 317-213-7522.
Please submit all announcements to Jim Ferrell at uucc.ferrell@sbcglobal.net. We will then use the submitted announcements to print an announcements insert for the Orders of Service on Sunday morning. All announcements should be submitted by noon Thursday for insertion into the Sunday order of service. Thanks so much for your cooperation!
