Food Pantry Collection this Sunday
Since it's beginning, UUCC has been a strong supporter of the Shared Blessings Food Pantry located at the United Methodist Church in Danville. Welcome and Welcome Back!
David Schuab
We are pleased to welcome David Schuab to membership at UUCC. And we thank April and Julia Lashbrook for introducing him to UUCC!
David was born in Memphis, TN, but spent most of his youth in Whittier, CA. Returning to Indiana with his parents, who were originally from Indianapolis, David has earned Bachelors and a Masters degrees in Political Science. He hopes to finish his PhD in Political Science from IU this year. In the meantime he works for the State of Indiana as a statistician. His hobby is music, having been a guitarist/singer/son writer since the age of fifteen. We'll be able to hear his music soon as he has recently joined our Music Committee. Welcome, David!
Kitty O'Dourty
Kitty O'Dourty was a UUCC charter member from back in the days when our fledgling congregation met at Roland Retirement Center in Brownsburg. She had attended All Souls before that. Kitty moved from Indy back to Brownsburg last fall. She has a son, Christian, who was in Deanna Carmen's kindergarten class in what seems just a couple of years ago. Kitty works at IUPUI in the Dept. of Chemistry as the graduate admissions secretary.
Kitty's two and a half year-old granddaughter, Elizabeth, is the light in her heart. She and Elizabeth are looking forward to warmer weather to continue their collection of rocks, sticks, acorns, leaves and whatever else they find on walks. For the past few years she has volunteered for a road course racing organization and became involved working as a crew person for a friend who races. Her part involves check and prep of safety equipment, recording stats, managing the in-car video, running radios and working as a spotter. She has a couple of tambourines, some maracas, a shekere (beaded gourd), and is available as a back-up musician when needed! Despite those hobbies, her absolute favorite thing to do is to have quiet time to curl up and read!
Volunteer Opportunities at UUCC
UUCC is growing, and many of our current volunteers are being stretched in ways they've never been stretched before. As part of an annual review of committees, the UUCC Board of Directors will be canvassing individual
members and regular attendees to see what interests you might have and where you might be willing to serve. We hope you will take the
opportunity to let us know not just what you do well but also what you enjoy!
On the " Board Board " next to the office area in the Overflow Room is a complete list of our committees, which will be updated as we go along. If you've never looked at it (or if it has been a long time), please stop by. Should you see a committee or position that catches your
interest or that you know you'd like to work with, please don't wait to be contacted - let the Committee Chair or an Board Member know and we'll get you in the thick of things!
To guide this work in future, we are still in need of a Volunteer Coordinator . This is a person who will serve as a focal point to match
volunteer opportunities and volunteers within UUCC. The complete position description is on the "Board Board". If you enjoy bringing
people together and would like to be one of the first contacts for new regular attendees of UUCC, please contact Jeff Haverly (Chair of the
Membership Committee).
Religious Exploration
Spirit Play
We've had a busy and constructive month in Spirit Play. We have opened three story boxes and made a special flower craft in conjunction with a new book.
The first story box describes the story of the Good Shepherd from the bible. The good shepherd knows his sheep, and when he sees a wolf and calls the sheep by name, they know him and trust him and come to safety in the pasture. This was in contrast to the previous shepherd who did not care deeply about the sheep. The children easily relate to this story, because they know how reassuring it feels to have someone know you and to be able to trust that person to have your best interests at heart.
The next story box we took out was the story of the Blind Men and the Elephant. The beautiful elephant hand-crafted by Marty McCoy invites the children to touch each of the six parts that the blind men encounter and wonder at their interpretations. The tusk must be a spear, the trunk must be a snake, the side must be a wall, the leg must be a tree trunk, and the tail must be a rope. My attempt to go abstract with the idea didn't go far, but the kids were proud of themselves for remembering each of the six possibilities at the end of class. There's plenty of time for abstraction later on!
Cathy and Tim Stiles brought in a special story and craft which the children enjoyed making. They used markers on coffee filters and sprayed with water to let the colors run slightly and used pipe cleaners to turn them into flower petals on a stem.
This past Sunday we told the story of Mole and the Baby Bird which describes what happens when Mole finds an abandoned baby bird and cares for it. Mole takes good care of the baby and it grows. Soon Mole puts the bird into a cage to keep it from flying off. Wise Grandpa Mole takes Mole on a walk where he can watch birds soaring high in the air. Of his own accord, Mole decides to free the baby bird he loves. He cries. The next day he sees his bird flying free like the others and is happy. The children totally understood both Mole's desire to keep and take care of the baby bird and the bird's need to have plenty of fresh air, space, and places to hunt for its own food.
The Spirit Play class is looking forward to new story boxes next month made by their friends in the Elementary Class.
End of Winter Game Day
Many thanks to all who contributed food, games, and good company on family game afternoon and to Mandy Henk for organizing the afternoon. It made for a low-key bonding play time!
Principle-ly Parenting
We kicked off our first class Sunday afternoon using the UUA's Parenting Trilogy as our guide. We had some lively discussion and some realization of what the real goals lie behind our journey of parenting from the UU perspective. We will continue to meet throughout the month of March and since each session is somewhat independent newcomers are welcome.
Our meeting time will be Sunday from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.at Amy Hayden's The Healing Chi on the square. Coffee hour should give all participants enough time to reconnect with their children and eat a sack lunch together. Child care will then be provided from 11:40 to 1:05 at the church with a parent supervisor and a teen helper. Looking forward to more eye-opening conversations!

All-Church Ultimate Frisbee
We'd like to start up again on 2 nd and 4 th Sundays as often as possible. If you've played with us already, we'll try to add you to the group list. If you haven't played and would like to be added, please contact Abe Schnake or Esther Rupert. We'll be meeting in the back of Ellis Park (practice football field) from about 11:45 to 1:00 on those days where we can gather a sufficient group (ideally 8 or more). This group is open to children, youth, and adults of all ages. We're not ultra-competitive, we love to have a good time, and it's a wonderful workout! Look for future announcements in your email and after services. Stick your gym shoes and a water bottle in your vehicle!
Heartland District Annual Meeting: Right Around the Corner!
For all UUCCers, The Heartland District Annual Meeting is right around the corner. This year we will be meeting April 9-11 at First Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Keynote speaker will be Kay Montgomery, the Executive Vice President of the UUA, as we mark our first Ten Years together as a District.
Workshops will echo the theme of the Ten Best by giving you ten best tips, suggestions, ideas for how to "do church" better. Join together with others in song and worship, learning and conducting the business of our District. Check out the Heartland District website at www.heartlanduu.org for details.
Also keep watching this Heartland website and newsletter for "late breaking" news as it occurs. They are still finalizing the details of the Saturday evening entertainment and the possibility of offering home hospitality to make your stay more home-friendly.
For all and any UUCCers interested, make sure you check it out and let a board member know if you are interested in seeking assistance in travel and/or attendance costs. Money is available. We need two voting members to attend. We also can help setup carpools with other members that may want to attend.
Alan Robb Scholarship Fund Now that tax refunds are beginning to roll in, please remember the Alan Robb Scholarship Fund. Your donation allows us to continue funding scholarships for college-bound Unitarian Universalist students.
Applications are now being accepted for the Robb Scholarship. This year there will be one scholarship of $400 awarded to help defray the cost of one year of college. Please see Jim Ferrell, David Chalfant or Barbara Whitehead for more information on the scholarship and for an application. -- Jim Ferrell, uucc.ferrell@sbcglobal.net , 317-852-2836 (home) or 317-716-4541 (cell).
