Upper Class
Ages 10+
Our theme for the year is Sacred Texts. We hope to make these texts come alive for the children through reading or listening, in-depth discussion, art expression, or other activities relevant to the stories or their historical and cultural contexts.
This year the format will allow the youth to choose their preferred response activity as soon as the story has been told. Some children may feel intrinsically motivated to draw or write about the story or to do further reading or research. Others may want to engage in Socratic questioning to further their understanding of the meaning behind the words. We'll have a real variety.
There is no prerequisite for taking part in these classes. We expect that the diversity of experiences among our children are similar to those among our adult members. We respect the life experiences and the interests of each individual child and think these differences can enhance the RE experience for all.
We're very pleased to announce these teachers and topics for the academic year (September 2008 through May 2009):
~ the first Sunday of every month
Christian / Tao Te Cheng & Narrative / Taoism & Earth-based Religions
~ the second Sunday of every month
Melissa / Compass of Zen / Buddhism
~ the third Sunday of every month
Neal and Lynn / Quaran & Bhagavad Gita / Hinduism and Islam
~ the fourth Sunday of every month
Esther / Bible / Christianity
We're also expanding the ways the youth can participate upstairs. Please let me know if any youth has interest in lighting the chalice or providing some music during the service.
